May 6, 1999 - Architectural Roof coatings., (Snellville, GA) has been named a partner in the U.S. EPA's newly-launched ENERGY STAR Roof Products Program.

The EPA's ENERGY STAR Program is a voluntary initiative with roofing manufacturers that encourage them to promote products that meet agreed upon efficiency criteria. This program seeks to reduce greenhouse gases by implementing strategies that lower power demand, improve municipal air quality and reduce the impact of urban heat islands. Urban heat islands describe the situation hundreds of cities face with increased temperatures due to the continued conversion of vegetation areas to commercial buildings, roads and parking lots. Higher temperatures increase cooling energy requirements and cuase additional smog generation and respiratory illness.

Architectural Roof Coatings, SEBS reflective roof coatings, reflects the sun's heat and damaging UV rays and also release any absorbed heat. These reflective roof coatings are now being seen as an important method in reducing Urban Heat Islands. Studies conducted by the EPA and DOE have shown white reflective roof coatings can reduce cooling energy demand in buildings by up to 50%, and because these reflective coatings protect against damage to the roof by sunlight, they last longer and can reduce maintenance costs.

The ENERGY STAR Roof Products Program will help building owners identify leading roofing products that offer substantial benefits of energy savings, improved air quality, longer lasting waterproofing performance and overall reduced costs.
